Architectural details.
Some 300 color photos and line drawings illustrate American architectural styles and distinguishing features such as doors, windows, roofs, columns, and porches. Reiss discusses their evolution and provides plenty of information for the curious layperson — all in a compact (6x7 inches) format. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Color matching handbook.
This small (6.5x8 inches) spiral bound book contains information on color theory as well as on three separate but related uses of color: in art, in home decoration, and in the garden. The impact is hampered somewhat by poor reproduction of the numerous color illustrations. Still, it's a good summary treatment for those who want a basic foundation in any or all three of the applicable areas. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Frank Lloyd Wright's Chicago.
Lloyd's Chicago years were 1887-1909, during which time he developed and refined the ideas at the foundation of his famous "Prairie Style." O'Gorman (a historian and architecture writer affiliated with the Newberry Library of Chicago and the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago) presents 96 Wright-designed buildings located in the Chicago area, arranged chronologically. He provides essays on the various stages of Wright's life and professional development and profiles the buildings with information about their construction and important features. Some 400 full-page color photos (adequately, though not beautifully reproduced) by photographer Simon Clay showcase the structures, sometimes from an aerial view. The book is oversize: 9.5x12.25 inches. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
