Allen Mem. Art Mus./Oberlin
The splendor of ruins in French landscape painting, 1630-1800.
Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name organized by the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, this volume presents French landscape paintings that depict, or at least include, ancient ruins. The catalog includes 36 paintings by 18 artists, as well as essays on the pastoral landscape, documenting ruins, and classical building types and motifs in French landscape paintings. A short biography of the artist, and notes on the painting's provenance and themes accompany each high-quality full page color reproduction. (Annotation ©2006 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
