Padilla (California State U., East Bay) presents an anthology of 25 essays for students on spatial and aspatial dimensions, concerns, and theories about city life. Beginning with the preindustrial era, scholars describe the Sumerians, Tenochtitlán, early Chinese civilization, the polis, European cities in the Middle Ages, and architecture. In the section on the industrial city, they discuss solidarity, the nature of cities, towns, the metropolis, urbanism, human ecology, and urban sociology. Postindustrial topics range from the San Francisco area and urban economy to societal changes, government, and planning. There is no index. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
