This collection features caricatures and drawings of British subjects in performing arts and culture by Al Hirschfeld, with brief commentary about some of the drawings by the artist, Lynn Redgrave, Julie Andrews, Simon Callow, Julie Christie, Louise Kerz Hirschfeld, Sir Peter Shaffer, and others. The drawings cover the 1920s to the 1990s, and are of plays, actors, cultural scenes, writers, and the royal family. The book is an expanded version of the exhibitions "Hirschfeld's Brits on Broadway" in London and "Hirschfeld's Hollywood," sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles. This is a paperbound reprint of a 2003 edition of a book first published in 1932 by E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc. as Manhattan Oases. Hirschfeld himself provides a brief dedication, which is followed by an introductory essay by New York journalist and author Pete Hamill. Then, capturing the end of an era, Hirschfeld's animated sketches and caricatures of scenes from New York City's speakeasies during Prohibition are presented full page.
