Louis I. Kahn; building art, building science.
Through an analysis of four buildings, Leslie (architecture, Iowa State U.) considers the work of American architect Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974), particularly his philosophies about construction and structure. Drawing on Khan's writings and speeches, he describes the empiricism and rationalism of his works, his background, and analyzes the design and construction of the Yale University Art Gallery, Richards Medical Research Laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California, and Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas, each illustrated with schemes, plans, and b&w photos. He concludes with thoughts about the architect's influence on the postmodernist movement. No index is provided.
