Archaeology, relics, and the law, 2d ed.
Only in recent years, says Cunningham (U. of California Hastings College of the Law), has a comprehensive law of archaeology begun to develop. In this volume he compiles materials — including first-hand accounts, legislation, and cases — that describe the legal and ethical challenges involved in the handling, transport, and ownership of archaeological relics. Disputes over the protection and control of artifacts are described, as well as cases of recovery and repatriation. The final chapter is devoted to laws regarding the protection and custody of human remains. Some notable topics include the handling of underwater relics and sunken enemy warships, the government as landowner, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and unmarked burials legislation.
