Arthur Erickson; critical works.
Olsberg, formerly associated with the Canadian Centre for Architecture, and Castro (architecture, McGill U., Canada) present this volume that critically examines the architectural work of Canadian Arthur Erickson (b. 1924) through 12 of his projects in Canada, the US, and England from the last half of the twentieth century. The book accompanies an exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery that surveys his major achievements. Essays analyzing his architectural language, style, designs for universities, and design methods, are accompanied by a portfolio of color photos and drawings. Other scholars in architecture and film and media studies from the US, Canada, and Germany also contributed to the volume. The book measures 11x11.5 inches. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Brian Jungen.
Totem-like carved baseball bats, huge animal skeletons made of plastic chairs, masks made of Nike Air Jordan shoes and human hair...these are some of the creations of Canadian artist Brian Jungen, who draws on his First Nations heritage to create extraordinary sculptures and installations. He won the Sobey Art Award in 2002, Canada's largest prized give to an artist under the age of 40; but this chronicle of his oeuvre speaks for itself in 372 color images. Editor Augaitis (Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada) supplies one of the six essays; the others, including an interview, are by curators based in Mexico, California, New York, and England. An artist's biography and a bibliography are included. The book is oversize: 10.5x11.25 inches. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Christopher Pratt; all my own work.
Published in a lavish oversize format (11.25x12 inches), this exhibition catalogue presents Pratt's large paintings in full-page and two-page color plates of excellent quality. Three essays are devoted to Pratt's life and career in Newfoundland, the subject matter and political message of various of his works, and an interview with the artist. The index is of works cited. The volume is co-published by Douglas & McIntyre for the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, which held the exhibition in honor of Pratt's 70th birthday, in 2005. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc.
