The John Tradescants; Gardeners to the Rose and Lily Queen, rev. ed.
Their two lives spanned over 90 years, and they still influence how gardeners conduct their art. John Tradescant and his son, also John, ranged over the world finding botanical wonders and bringing them back to a range of clients including Charles I. Eventually their collection of anatomical and botanical rarities became the basis of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the first public museum in the country. Leith-Ross not only describes their lives and times, including the transition from father to son as premier horticulturists, but also lists the plants received from 1629-33 and in 1634 as well as the amazing list of rarities in the Musaeum Tradescentianum, including its eggs, birds, books, costumes, instruments of war, articles of faith imperial medals, and specimens of animals and plants from as far away as Russia, Africa and America.
