The ground of the image.
This collection of nine chapter-essays, translated from those published in French in 2003-4 describes Nancy's recent work on images and visual art. Nancy (philosophy, U. Marc Bloch) examines the ambivalence of the image as well as its power and paradoxes in its flat but receding space. His references run from photography, video, Roman death masks, silent films, Renaissance painting and the thought of Kan and Heidegger. He explores violence, forbidden representation, the "uncanny" landscape, imagination, the role of the Other, women and Christianity. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
