Ethos and behavior; the English novel from Jane Austen to Henry James (including George Meredith, W.M. Thackeray, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy).
In his preface, Tague states that the 19th century English authors that are the subject of this book "believe that circumstance is a byproduct of self." He examines the questions of ethical behavior raised — but rarely resolved — in the works of Jane Austen, W.M. Thackeray, George Meredith, George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and Henry James, giving each work (15 in all) a close reading in terms of its reflection on and reworking of ideas in ethical behavior. Value, belief and experience in women's jail-based adult education.
Drawing on interviews with women in a halfway house transitioning from prison back into the community, Mageehon (who taught literacy and GED classes at a prison) studies this neglected population's experiences of such classes and factors shaping their perceptions. Rather than presuming a value-neutral stance, she takes the position that a human being is an organism engaging in transaction with features of her environment. Poems cited reinforce this perspective. Appendices include an autobiographical sketch of the researcher (as such disclosure is central to qualitative research), and methodological notes on her doctoral dissertation research. The cover and book spine display the title Education Through her Eyes. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
