Fair and healthy land use; environmental justice and planning.
This report provides ideas, tools, and examples for integrating environmental justice into land-use planning. It identifies the core principles of land-use planning and regulation that promote community participation, equitable treatment, and a healthy environment for community residents. It addresses topics such as neighborhood planning, environmental justice audits, zoning techniques, land-use permits, and public participation. The report is designed to assist planners and planning officials in thinking about environmental justice issues at all levels, from the macro level, such as the development of regional plans, to the micro level, such as permits for specific land-use projects. Appendices provide summaries of legislation. Color photos and maps are included. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
The right to transportation; moving to equity.
Not only did transportation play a key role in the civil rights movement, but the Supreme Court has recognized that the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to travel. Sanchez (city and metropolitan planning department, U. of Utah) and Brenman (Washington State Human Rights Commission) examine the social and economic costs of transportation policies in light of urban demographics. The book includes an extensive glossary of transportation equity terms, executive orders regarding Native American access to sacred sites and environmental justice for minority/low-income/limited English proficiency populations, and questions for discussion.
