Art Gallery, U. of New Hampshire
The simple art; printed images in an age of magnificence.
This catalogue accompanied an exhibition organized by and appearing at The Art Gallery, U. of New Hampshire, September 6 through October 18, 2006, and at the Thorne-Sagendorph Art Gallery, Keene State College, November 9 through December 10, 2006. The exhibit brought together a selection of 16th-century Italian prints from the collections of various New England academic institutions which are seldom seen by a broad audience. The catalogue entries are grouped by imagery type into six categories: religious subjects; literary, mythological, historical, or legendary subjects; allegorical subjects; portraits; decorative designs; and documentary and genre subjects. Emison (art history, U. of New Hampshire) provides an introduction to the role of printmaking in Renaissance visual culture. Illustrated with b&w reproductions. No subject index.
