Architectura; elements of architectural style.
Of use to students of architecture, this beautifully illustrated, oversized volume (10.25x13.25 inches) offers a global view of architecture that focuses on the parts of the building and materials used for their creation. Turrets, bitumen, steps, balustrades, defensive walls and similar specialized building materials and parts of architecture are described in two- to four-page sections interspersed with descriptions of individual examples. The range of examples is notable for its international scope, with many choices from the Islamic world. A caveat: students of architectural history will find many inaccuracies, including the author's frequent habit of treating a heavily restored building as original. As an idea book for architecture students, however, the book is to be recommended. Lewis is at the U. of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. (Annotation ©2009 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
