A century of Parks Canada, 1911-2011.
Campbell (history and Canadian studies, Dalhousie U.) briefly traces the history of Parks Canada (known under other names until 1998) since a 1911 bill created the world's first agency for "respecting forest reserves and parks." Contributors treat the agency as a lens through which to view the continuing dialog between Canadians and their land. Issues discussed include tourism promotion, controversies over land use, representations of the park in Acadian popular culture, Aboriginal land ties, and archeological studies. The book includes period maps and illustrations, and appendices on Park reserves and the National Park zoning system and agency. Distributed by Michigan State U. Press.
