Aiming to help policymakers and educators improve its design and implementation, Hess and Finn assemble 12 chapters that evaluate the No Child Left Behind Act five years after its enactment. They examine it in general, in specific states (Colorado, New Jersey, California, and Michigan) and districts, and in terms of restructuring districts and schools. The book builds on the previous volume, Leaving No Child Behind? Options for Failing Schools, which offered an initial assessment of NCLB and guidance for implementation; it is meant to offer an evaluation that can impact the Act's redesign and execution, focusing on its remedy provisions. Chapters were presented at a research conference at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington D.C., in November of 2006. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
