Cook (Stanford U.) and Massey (Princeton U.) present a collection of articles by 45 international academics and researchers. The 25 contributions are organized into sections on theory and methods, social processes, institutions and culture, political and economic sociology, differentiation and stratification, demography, urban and rural community sociology, policy, historical sociology, and sociology and world regions. A sampling of topics: Bourdieu in American sociology, 1980-2004; production regimes and the quality of employment in Europe; military service in the life course; the consequences of economic globalization for affluent democracies; causes and consequences of inequality; immigration and religion; workforce diversity and inequality — power, status, and numbers; and old inequalities, new disease — HIV/AIDs in sub-Saharan Africa. The text has no subject index, but contains a cumulative index of contributing authors for Volumes 24-33, and a thematically-grouped index of chapter titles for Volumes 24-33.
