Kepelino's traditions of Hawaii, rev. ed.
The 1878 text, Moolelo Hawaii, by Native Hawaiian historian Kepelino was the basis of this title first published in 1932. He collected traditional wisdom relating to such aspects of life as the gods, calendar, settling the islands, food preparation, and dreams. This edition includes the original side-by-side Hawaiian and English text edited by Beckwith (who was a research associate in Hawaiian folklore, Bishop Museum), a new foreword by contemporary Native Hawaiian scholar Noelani Arista, and notes by Mary Kawena Pukui, a Native Hawaiian cultural expert. Moku o Lo'e; a history of Coconut Island.
Coconut Island in Kane'ohe Bay has undergone many incarnations: private island of Hawaiian chiefs, private resort of the rich and famous, site of a World War II Italian POW camp, backdrop for Hollywood movies, and home of the Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology. Cultural anthropologist/historian Klieger (Oakland Museum of California) presents a photo-essay on this evolution culminating in the 1995 reunification of the island's private and public sections. In wide format, the book includes photographs of island sites and personalities, and information on its land title history. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
