Chinese posters; art from the great proletarian cultural revolution.
Tompkins lived in Beijing for nearly five years at the beginning of the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, and bought political posters as they were being published. Over 500 now form the Ann Tompkins (Tang Fandi) and Lincoln Cushing Chinese Poster Collection at the University of California at Berkeley's East Asian Library. Cushing is a Berkeley-based historian and activist of social and political graphics. They provide a substantial introduction to reproductions in brilliant color; captions identify the title, artist, publisher, date, and size. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Elegance; the Séeberger brothers and the birth of fashion photography, 1909-1939.
The Séeberger brothers went to racetracks, beach resorts, ski resorts, and fashionable locations in Paris taking photographs of lady's fashion (and some men's too), then selling their work to magazines. Though they kept the camera's focus carefully on their finery — dresses, shoes, bags, hats, furs, and feathers — they also captured the rich at play, with the names of the famous recorded for each photo. This oversize volume (9.25x11 inches) presents a full catalog of the images in plates of excellent quality, and accompanied by an introductory essay on the Séebergers and the fashion world of their day. First published in French, in 2006. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
