Review of research in education, v.33, 2009: Risk, schooling, and equity.
Contributors representing a range of theoretical perspectives and research interests examine theoretical, epistemological, practical, and policy considerations related to the construction of risk in the broad context of schooling, and assess the implications of these conceptions of risk for improving instruction, classroom practices, and school cultures. The authors discuss how children and youth experience and live with risk in and out of school, and suggest ways to reduce institutional barriers to students' full engagement in school. Some specific topics discussed include the intersection of schools and child welfare, classroom challenges for urban, low-income, African American boys, culture and learning for students from non-dominant communities, the education of children in immigrant families, and consequences of physical health and mental illness risks for academic achievement in grades K-12. The book will be of interest to researchers and practitioners in social science and education. Gadsden is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania. (Annotation ©2010 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
