Managing for outcomes; shifting from process-centric to results-oriented operations.
In what Sigler (director of admissions, U. of Minnesota-Twin Cities) calls the Age of Outcomes, higher education needs to become as bottom line-oriented as the corporate world. He argues that this is the case because of the greater demand for accountability and the scarcity of resources. Faulting process- driven student affairs' programs that do not offer measurable outcomes, he describes the Tri-O (Outcome-Oriented Operation) management operating system, its evolution, components and their corresponding purpose and outcomes. E.g., "star tracker" empowers people to stay on track for success; its results are effective staff development and performance evaluation process. (So we are back to process after all.)
