One thousand buildings of London.

Davies, Gill. Photographs by John Reynolds.
Black Dog and Leventhal, ©2006    576 p.    $39.95    NA970
978-1-57912-587-5

This oversize book (8x12.25 inches), features the eponymous thousand buildings of London, organized in nine sections by post code, each section with a brief description of the area and a graphic map. Each building is presented with a black-and-white photograph, a basic address to complement its position on the aforementioned map, and a description including the year of build and architect or builders when known. All of the photographs are new images taken by London-based freelance photographer Reynolds; this means that several buildings that were under scaffolding at the time of writing (such as the Royal Festival Hall) were omitted from the tome. This book is intended for visitors or residents of London and lovers of architectural history or photography; it's noted that it contains enough walking tours to keep a reader busy for months, but its large size and weight will prevent the casual traveler from packing it in a suitcase. The time frame ranges from medieval to modern, though due to the book's organization by location it is difficult to locate edifices by specific period; indexing is by name, but not by era. A brief glossary is included. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
