An East Asian community and the United States.
Eight academics and researchers from the U.S., Japan, and Singapore contribute seven chapters clarifying the roots, background, and theoretical framework of the concept of an East Asian community and providing a policy perspective on how the U.S. should participate in this framework, taking the intents and strategies of Asian countries into consideration. The book is the culmination of a three- year research project conducted by the Council on East Asian Community from October 2004 to September 2007, with support of the Japan Foundation for Global Partnership. Major challenges discussed include balancing national interests with global concerns, problems of political reconciliation, and relationships with the region's other multilateral organizations and initiatives. For academics, researchers, and policy makers. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Understanding Islamic charities.
Political scientists and other researchers, most associated with the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, discuss thematic issues related to Islamic charities, many of which have been accused by the Bush administration of aiding terrorism. Then they provide case studies of individual organizations — Hamas and Hizballah — and charities based in various countries. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
