Lowrey is curator of the permanent collection at the National Arts Club, which has been based in a stately home on the south side of New York's Gramerey Park since 1906. This catalogue documents the important role played by the organization in nurturing and showcasing American painting. Following an introductory essay on the club's history, the text features paintings and sculptures created by 70 of the club's Artist Life Members, a group of men and women who were active in the U.S. during the late-19th and early- to mid-20th centuries. Included are works that have been on fairly continuous display over the years and others that have been in storage. Each full-color reproduction is accompanied by a one- to two-page description providing background on the artist and the featured work. London-born Schwartzman is a renowned graphic designer and documentary film-maker; among his accomplishments, he won an Oscar in 1982, was the director of design for the Los Angeles Olympic Games that same year, and later designed commemorative posters for the Annual Academy Awards.
