The counselor and the law; a guide to legal and ethical practice, 5th ed.
The very low number of counselors known to engage in unethical or illegal conduct is probably due more to the fundamental values and practices of the profession rather than to specific training, say Wheeler, a lawyer in Maryland and the District of Columbia, and Bertram, a mental health counselor in Florida, but still a bit of advice is not out of order, especially for advanced students. The textbook has a long pedigree: the 1975 first edition was written by Thomas Burgum and Scott Anderson, the 1985 second and 1990 third by Bruce Hopkins and Barbara S. Anderson, and the 1996 fourth by Anderson solo. It still has no index. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
Youth at risk; a prevention resource for counselors, teachers, and parents, 5th ed.
Capuzzi (counselor education, The Pennsylvania State University) and Gross (professor emeritus, Arizona State University) provide guidelines for prevention and intervention with at-risk youth. Professionals and academics in counseling psychology define at-risk behaviors and explore the causes of problems such as abuse, low self-esteem, depression, and mood disorders, as well as eating disorders, gang membership, suicide, and homelessness. Cases illustrate prevention and intervention approaches from individual, family, school, and community perspectives. This fifth edition is updated to reflect research since the publication of the fourth edition in 2004. There is a new chapter on racial and ethnic identity. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc.
