Beeton, Sue.
CSIRO, ©2006    246 p.    $49.95    G155
978-0-643-06962-6

As communities in developed and developing nations contend with ever-increasing internationalization, they are also dealing with how they present and regulate themselves to the world. According to Beeton (sport, tourism and hospitality management, La Trobe U.) one sure way for communities to develop effective strategies that develop identity and further growth is to build tourism into their plans. She explains how careful management of tourism (conducted by members of the community or by those outside) can improve the bottom line without stretching resources, gives leading theories of tourism, describes the process of planning and the importance of including the community in developing strategies, and details the means of marketing. She also describes rural tourism and dealing with crisis. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Was Australia charted before 1606?; the Jave la grande inscriptions.

Richardson, William A. R.
National Library of Australia, ©2006    132 p.    $34.95    DU98.1
978-0-642-27642-1

Richardson (Portuguese and Brazilian Studies, Flinders U.) makes good use of his research on the history of cartography to describe claims by the Portuguese, French, Spanish, Indonesians and Chinese that they were the first non-Aboriginal people to locate Australia rather than the Dutch. He works through early maps upon which explorers claimed to have found Jave la Grande, a land mass which some identified as Australia, then gives the investigation his own stamp when he analyzes records of exactly where explorers thought this land mass was, what shape it took, and how they named what appears to be its beautiful, if transient features.
