Celebrating the value of protest and dissent, this documentary reader collects a diverse range of materials, focusing "on instances in which dissent from authority was publicly expressed and in which the protest had an impact on society." The documents are diverse in time and geography and include essays, news articles, sermons, screenplays, poems, songs, excerpts of novels, speeches, letters, photographs, paintings, drawing, and advertisements that are either examples of protest in and of themselves or record the protest of others. Opening materials document the roots of protest from earliest recorded history until the protestant reformation and demonstrate the wide variety of the ways protest has been expressed in human history. The rest of the reader is organized around seven major themes: civil rights, national self-determination, economic justice, environmental conservation, religious freedom, peace and war, and international political freedoms.
