The biographical dictionary of Scottish women; from earliest times to 2004. (reprint, 2006)
Now in a paperback reprint of the 2006 hardbound edition, this reference contains entries written by a team of 280 scholars on 830 women important to Scottish history. In addition to full names, pseudonyms, parents, dates of birth and death, and a concise biography, each entry contains a list of sources and possible further reading. Many of the entries include co-subjects: sisters, colleagues, partners or other women associated with the main subject. The dictionary also has group entries for the Four Maries, Glasgow Girls, and the Scottish Women's Hospitals. Entries are cross- referenced, where appropriate, and can also be found through a thematic index that lists the entries under 77 different headings. Distributed by Columbia U. Press. The handbook of creative writing.
Earnshaw (English, Sheffield Hallam U., UK; co-founder of an arts and literature e-zine) has compiled a handbook covering many key aspects of creative writing: critical theory, the craft, the writing of specific genres, and the realities of the writer's life. Most of the contributors are both writers and teachers, since — as the last of the 48 chapters indicates — most people cannot make a living by freelance writing. A glossary and online resources are included. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Entries also include issues of disapora and the general foreign policy of colonizing nations. Each entry is signed and includes suggestions for further reading. The Kenana handbook of Sudan.
Sponsored by the Kenana Sugar Company, Sudan's industrial powerhouse, this informational handbook is presented with the stated intention of incorporating all significant aspects of contemporaneous and historical Sudan. Copiously illustrated, it's 55 chapters first provide overviews of prehistory and archaeology; discuss cultural, political, and economic history; introduce the history of pilgrims and traders; review environmental conditions and Sudan's flora and fauna; describe tourism opportunities and cultural experiences; and explore Sudan's arts and literature. Just under half of the contributions are dedicated to discussion of the economy, industry, and doing business in Sudan and discuss investment opportunities, different economic sectors, economic policy, and related topics. Also included are essays on current Sudanese politics, the Sudan Interim National Constitution, and the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement and "fact files" on Sudan's current leaders and useful words and phrases. Overall, the work appears to be intended mainly to present a positive view of the country to potential visitors and investors. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
