Shepherd (earth and space science, York U.) and Kruchio, the founding editor of an online academic journal on technology and culture, have written this commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Canadian space program to celebrate the first meeting of COSPAR (Committee on Space Research) in 1958. The authors describe COSPAR's intentions of being fully functional by the time of the International Geophysical Year in 1958, and how the Canadian space program was formalized in 1989 by the creation of the Canadian Space Agency. General audiences interested in space exploration will enjoy the color photographs from missions such as ISIS-II and Radarsat-1, explicit descriptions of COSPAR collaborations with NASA and the actual anniversary celebration held in Montreal in July 2008. The lunar explorations scrapbook; a pictorial history of lunar vehicles.

Godwin, Robert.
Apogee Books, ©2007    221 p.    $36.95    TL789
978-1-894959-69-8

Godwin has edited the NASA Mission Reports series in the past, and now he raids his archives on space exploration to present this pictorial history of lunar vehicles used for landing, roving and flying. Through hundreds of color photographs, diagrams, schematics and illustrations, the author provides thorough descriptions of such vehicles as MOLAB (the first mobile lunar laboratory) and SHELAB, which was designed as a short-term habitat for astronauts. Godwin himself confesses that this book is too fanciful to be considered as a reference, but general audiences will find the information entertaining and informative. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc.
