Sweeteners and sugar alternatives in food technology.

Ed. by Helen Mitchell.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2006    413 p.    $184.99    TP421
978-1-4051-3434-7

In response to public and regulatory pressure to reduce the sugar content of food products, editor Helen Mitchell and team of international contributors provide information for basic non-sugar sweetening and functional solutions in order that processed foods not only taste and perform as well as sugar-based products, but can offer consumer benefits. They begin by looking in turn at benefits in calorie reduction, dental health, digestive health, and glycaemic control. Then they profile the various sugar substitutes. Tendinopathy in athletes.

Ed. by Savio L-Y. Woo et al. (Encyclopaedia of sports medicine; v.12)
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    233 p.    $125.00    RD688
978-1-4051-5670-7

Published under the sponsorship of the International Olympic Committee in collaboration with the International Federation of Sports Medicine, this volume covers the basic science and clinical aspects of tendinopathy. An international group of clinicians and scientists contribute 15 chapters that were presented at the IOC Medical Commission workshop, "Understanding and Prevention of Tendinopathy in the Athlete," held in October 2003 in Athens, Greece. Woo (bioengineering, Musculoskeletal Research Center, Pittsburgh) et al. bring together chapters — updated and expanded for the volume — on epidemiology, tendon biology and biomechanics, training and physical therapy, and clinical management, including surgical and alternative treatments. Understanding biological psychology.

Corr, Philip J. (Basic psychology)
Blackwell Publishing, ©2006    693 p.    $79.95    QP360
978-0-631-21953-8

To help students stay abreast of a field in which 20,000-30,000 articles are said to be published every year, Corr (psychology, U. of Wales, Swansea) emphasizes the central role that biological processes play in psychology rather than brain facts and figures. Coverage of foundations, approaches, and applications spans evolution and genetics to the "rediscovery" of consciousness due to technology enabling the study of its neural correlates. The text includes interesting critical thinking questions (e.g., "How would Darwin have modified his theory of evolution if he had known about classical genetics?"), and an extensive glossary of terms from "ablation" to zombie". Understanding laboratory investigations for nurses and health professionals, 2d ed.

Higgins, Chris.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    358 p.    $49.95    RB37
978-1-4051-3127-8

Higgins, who is not further identified, helps nurses understand how the work of clinical laboratories contributes to patient care. She explains why a particular test is being ordered for a patient, what sort of sample is required, how that sample is obtained, and the significance of the test results for the patient. The information draws from basic science that nurses should be familiar with. Covering all tests not would be feasible, so she selects the most common, representing about 70-80% of work in an average district general hospital laboratory. The first edition was published in 2000. (Annotation ©2007 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
