Other topics include the role of nod-like receptors in innate immunity and inflammatory disease, regulation of hepcidin and iron-overload disease, and the brainstem and serotonin in sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The book includes an introduction in which Peter Ward (pathology, University of Michigan Medical School) describes the first 50 years of his career in research, focusing on his mentors at several institutions. Ward also explains the main directions and conclusions of his most recent research, with concepts illustrated with color diagrams. There is no subject index; however, the book contains a list of chapter titles and corresponding volume and page numbers for all chapters in volumes 1-4 of the series, listed under seven general categories such as cell injury and repair, neoplasia, and infectious and immunological diseases.
