American gardens, 1890-1930; Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Midwest regions.
Historic photos from Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society, Chicago Historical Society, and other sources reflect the era's concern for site and the relation of interior rooms to exterior garden spaces and are reproduced in full-page plates in this oversized volume (12.25x9.25 inches). Gardens are included for homes built by many well-known architects, including Delano & Aldrich, and at aristocratic estates, such as that of Isabella Stewart Gardner. The book includes a 15-page essay in which the editor lays out the important issues that challenged the landscape architecture in late 19th-early 20th centuries and gives a background of the landscape architecture as a profession. The volume also features an appendix of biographies of each of the landscape designers whose work is shown in the book. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
