Aluminum recycling and processing for energy conservation and sustainability.

Ed. by John A.S. Green.
ASM International, ©2007    267 p.    $150.00    TD812
978-0-87170-859-5

This book collects basic facts on the modeling of material flow in the aluminum industry, life-cycle materials and energy inputs, and products, emissions, and wastes. The energy savings involved with recycling, various scrap-sorting technologies, and future energy- saving opportunities in aluminum processing are outlined. The positive impact of the growing use of lightweight aluminum in several segments of the transportation infrastructure, and its benefit on greenhouse gas production, is also highlighted. Chapters cover life- cycle engineering and design, life-cycle inventory analysis of the North American aluminum industry, material flow modeling of aluminum for sustainability, identification and sorting of wrought aluminum alloys, and US energy requirements for aluminum production. The book will allow readers to analyze complex sustainability issues associated with the aluminum industry. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

High-temperature corrosion and materials applications.

Lai, George Y.
ASM International, ©2007    461 p.    $188.00    TA462
978-0-87170-853-3

The purpose of this book is to provide engineers with technical data on real materials and issues related to the problem of corrosion in waste-to-energy boilers and incinerators, coal-fired boilers, oil- fired boilers and furnaces, and black liquor recovery boilers. The book covers primarily engineering data, with brief discussion of thermodynamic aspects of corrosion reactions. Brief discussion of the plant process and operating conditions is also provided to help readers to better understand the possible corrosion reactions. The focus is mainly on commercial alloys. Chapters cover types of corrosion, such as oxidation, nitridation, corrosion by halogen and halides, and hydrogen attack, as well as types of boilers. B&w photos are included. Lai is a metallurgical and corrosion consultant who has written other technical books. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Steel metallurgy for the non-metallurgist.

Verhoeven, John D.
ASM International, ©2007    220 p.    $85.00    TA684
978-0-87170-858-8

Verhoeven (engineering emeritus, Iowa State U.) starts from simple concepts taught in many high school chemistry classes ad proceeds to the complexities of heat treatment of nearly all types of steel as well as cast iron. Working from his experience with practicing bladesmiths for a couple of decades, Verhoeven starts with the characteristics of pure iron, then moves to solutions and phase diagrams. He applies these concepts to his descriptions of steel and the iron-carbon phase diagram, the various microstructures of room-temperature steel, mechanical properties (including the tensile test, the hardness test, the notched impact test, fatigue failure and residual stresses), the low-alloy American Iron and Steel Institute steels, diffusion as a mechanism for atom migration, control of grain size, hardenability of steel, tempering, austenization, quenching, stainless steels, tool steels, solidification, cast irons, and surface hardening treatments of steels. Appendices include material on temperature measurement and stainless steels for knifemakers. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Surface modification technologies; proceedings.

International Conference on Surface Modification Technologies (20th: 2006: Vienna, Austria) Ed. by T.S. Sudarshan and J.J. Stiglich.
ASM International, ©2007    146 p.    $123.00    TA418
978-0-87170-856-4

Papers from a September 2006 conference are presented here, in sections on corrosion resistant coatings, processing of materials, plasma thermal spraying, surface treatment, vapor deposition processes, and wear resistant coatings. Some specific topics examined include plasma spray coatings of sol-gel ceramic nanopowders, PVD coatings to enhance service performance of die casting dies for aluminum alloy, and technical aspects of pulsed CVD siliconizing of steel surfaces. Other subjects covered are erosion and impact wear resistance of thermal sprayed coatings, surface hardened molybdenum alloys for the processing of polymers, the influence of processing parameters on shot coating of graphite powder, and chromate replacement in aluminum corrosion protection coatings. There is no subject index. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Testing and failure analysis; proceedings. (CD-ROM included)

International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis (33d: 2007: San Joé, CA)
ASM International, ©2007    355 p.    $165.00    TA169
978-0-87170-863-2

The 67 papers selected for the November 2007 symposium explore different approaches to the testing, analysis, characterization, and metrology of electronic devices and systems from nanoscale to macroscale. Researchers present new developments in circuit edit, in-line metrology, sample preparation, yield enhancement, photon- based techniques, package and assembly level failure analysis, and system level testing. Topics include tool- related surface damage on wafers, the effects of backside circuit edit on transistor characteristics, wrong redundancy evaluation on DRAM devices, series capacitance in high-speed differential pairs, and a comparison of active and passive voltage contrast for failure localization. The book only lists authors in the index, but the papers are searchable on the CD-ROM in PDF format. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
