This monograph is intended as a research source and agenda- setting document for the upcoming 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V), the "bible" of mainstream psychiatry. Psychiatrists working with the American Psychiatric Association introduce 26 chapters addressing the import of gender differences and life stage in health and illness. Contributors discuss this evolving recognition through previous DSM iterations; data on sex ratios in psychiatric disorders; diagnostic controversies; and interaction of gender and age (from autism in the very young to co-morbid disorders in the elderly) with neurobiological and sociocultural factors. Written for clinicians and also of use to policy makers and planners in managed care or public health systems, this reference contains discussion and descriptions of the various formal assessments available to supplement the DSM-IV-TR standard. Making no attempt to be comprehensive, the volume selects widely used measures and those of the best potential clinical utility from a practical standpoint, namely, the measures are all in English, the patient information is easily obtained through verbal, written or cognitive performance, the assessment can be carried out by the caregiver in an office setting, and the assessment has been peer-reviewed. Forty new measures are included in the second edition for a total of 275 with over 150 of them on the CD-ROM. Four chapters introduce the handbook and the factors to consider in selecting, using, and interpreting measures. The volume contains 5 indexes: by DSM-IV-TR classification, the measures on the CD-ROM, by measure, by abbreviations for measures, and by subject. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
