Evidence-based nursing; an introduction.

Ed. by Nicky Cullum et al.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2008    312 p.    $49.95    RT42
978-1-4051-4597-8

The chapters in this book were largely developed from editorials previously published in the journal Evidence-Based Nursing. While the phrase "evidence-based" has been turning up in every field from government to sports, the editors define evidence-based nursing as "...the application of valid, relevant, research-based information in nurse decision-making." The intent, of course, is to enhance patient care and improve outcomes. The book offers a step-by-step approach for nurses faced with understanding and evaluating different types of evidence, and critically appraising the studies behind them. It also discusses how the findings can be implemented in clinical practice. Most chapters include learning exercises. A glossary is included. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

High pressure processing of foods.

Ed. by Christopher J. Doona and Florence E. Feeherry.
Blackwell Publishing, ©2007    246 p.    $184.99    TP371
978-0-8138-0944-1

One way to increase the amount of healthy food that gets to consumers is to find ways to reduce spoilage without draining energy resources. High pressure processing (HPP), a relatively simple technology, deactivates such pathogens as Clostridium botulinum without compromising food quality. According to the contributors of these 11 articles, soon HPP will be ready to produce sterile, shelf-stabile low-acid foods at a global level. They introduce the basic techniques and processes and give specifics on germination of Bacillus subtilis in high pressure, inactivation of Bactillus cereus and Bacillus, responses of Clostridium botulinum and other endospores to HPP and nonlinear inactivation kinetics of E. coli, sensitization of microorganisms to HPP by phenolic compounds, the functional genomics for optimal microbiological stability, quality differences in low-acid foods with HPP, consumer evaluations of HPP foods, and compression heating and temperature control in HPP. This just might work. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Immune dysfunction and immunotherapy in heart disease.

Ed. by Ronald Ross Watson and Douglas F. Larson.
Blackwell Futura, ©2007    308 p.    $149.95    RC682
978-1-4051-5568-7

Heart failure (HF) affects some five million Americans. Since there are currently no FDA-approved therapeutics for diastolic HF and those for systolic disease are considered palliative, Watson and Larson (both affiliated with the Sarver Heart Center, College of Medicine, U. of Arizona, Tucson) are among those seeking to develop immunomodulatory therapeutics to treat HF. In 28 chapters, international immunologists discuss such aspects of the multifactoral pathophysiology of HF as the roles of ultraviolet radiation, T-lymphocytes, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in disease progression; experimental models and clinical trials targeting such inflammatory mediators; and immune dysfunction relating to oral pathogens and diseases such as diabetes. Dietary markers of HF and the anti-inflammatory actions of antioxidants are also considered. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
