Algebraic topology; homology and cohomology. (reprint, 1970)

Wallace, Andrew H.
Dover Pub. Co., ©2007    272 p.    $15.95    QA612
978-0-486-46239-4

This self-contained text is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and may be used either after or concurrently with courses in general topology and algebra. It surveys several algebraic invariants: the fundamental group, singular and Cech homology groups, and a variety of cohomology groups. Proceeding from the view of topology as a form of geometry, Wallace (professor emeritus, University of Pennsylvania) emphasizes geometrical motivations and interpretations. Once beyond the singular homology groups, he advances an understanding of the subject's algebraic patterns, leaving geometry aside to study these patterns as pure algebra. Exercises are included, and many of them feature results that appear in later expositions. Appendices offer reviews of background material in fundamental groups and general topology. This is an unabridged republication of the edition published by W. A. Benjamin, Inc., New York, 1970. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

The radon transform and some of its applications. (reprint, 1983)

Deans, Stanley R.
Dover Pub. Co., ©2007    295 p.    $17.95    QA649
978-0-486-46241-7

Deans (physics, University of South Florida) provides basic information about the properties of the Radon transform, gives examples illustrating some of its more subtle points, documents a wide variety of applications of the transform, and offers a guide to literature related to the transform. Material is written to be accessible to those with only a basic undergraduate background in mathematics such as that normally required by medical students, engineers, or physicists. The book helps fill in the gap between highly rigorous treatments and applications, and will be of interest to the theorist who is interested in applications, as well as the experimentalist who wishes to gain a better understanding of the theoretical foundations but is not trained as a professional mathematician. This Dover edition is an unabridged republication of the 1993 revised edition of the work (containing corrections and updated references) published by Krieger Publishing Company, Malabar, Florida. The book was first published in 1983 by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Stochastic tools in turbulence. (reprint, 1970)

Lumley, John L.
Dover Pub. Co., ©2007    194 p.    $12.95    QA913
978-0-486-46270-7

This reprint of the 1970 edition published by Academic Press presents mathematical tools for describing and solving problems related to stochastic vector fields in a straightforward and accessible manner. Lumley (engineering emeritus, Cornell U.) begins at the ground floor with by describing probability distributions and densities, then moves to moments, characteristic functions, Gaussian distribution, random functions, random processes in more dimensions, Fourier transforms, tensors, the theory of generalized functions and invariant theory along with isotropy and axisymmetry. Examples and illustrations abound, and most advanced undergraduates or graduate students should be able to work through the problems unaided. Lumley also provides extensive appendixes on Fourier transforms tensors, generalized functions, and invariant theory. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
