Buntin (entomology, University of Georgia) gathers the latest information on managing small grain insects found on wheat, barley, oats, rye, and triticale crops in the US and Canada, with an emphasis on wheat. Although the handbook focuses on insect pests of small grains, noninsect pests, such as mites, are also covered. Early chapters provide information about small grains and their production, principles and practices of small grain insect management, injury to small grains by insects, and plant pathogens. The remainder of the book is devoted to discussions of insect and mite pests of small grains and to beneficial organisms, with sections on specific insects arranged alphabetically by common name. The book is illustrated with color photos, drawings, and distribution maps on almost every page, and includes a glossary. There is also a directory of sources of local information in the US and Canada. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)
