Biomedical device technology; principles and design.
This book examines the principles and design of biomedical devices and their applications in medicine. Specific designs and constructions are used to illustrate concepts whenever possible. Focus is on diagnostic and therapeutic devices that are either commonly used or whose principle and design represent typical applications of the technology. To limit the scope, medical imaging equipment and laboratory instrumentations are excluded from the book. Starting from an introduction to the origins of biological signals, the book covers fundamentals of biomedical instrumentation, such as electrodes and transducers, then looks at clinical applications, operation, and performance of specific biomedical devices. Architectural and schematic diagrams are used to illustrate how specific device functions are implemented. Appendices offer primers on Fourier analysis, medical telemetry development, and medical gas supply systems. The book is intended for engineers and technologists, and can also be used as a text or reference for courses in biomedical device technology. Chan is program head of the Biomedical Engineering Technology Program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. (Annotation ©2008 Book News Inc. Portland, OR)

Motor development and movement activities for preschoolers and infants with delays; a multisensory approach for professionals and families, 2d ed.
Writing in an accessible style, Cowden (University of New Orleans) and Torrey (special education programs, Jefferson Parish Public Schools) provide information about the motor development of young children with delays or disabilities, for families, students, and professionals in motor development, adapted physical education, physical therapy, special education, and early intervention. A practical approach is used so that families and caregivers can provide instruction. The authors explain principles of motor development theories and relate them to practical intervention, answer questions about muscle tone, provide directions for early diagnosis and assessment in developmental domains, and help professionals and families understand the impact of medical conditions on motor development and related daily living skills. B&w photos are included. While the book emphasizes the age group from infancy to age six years, the information and activities in the book can also benefit older children.
